Mike Cuenca, Feb 2024

Mike Cuenca is a Cuban American, self-taught, genre-forward writer and director known for his raw, character-driven storytelling and commitment to a DIY ethos. He’s not *just* a filmmaker — but a prolific genre auteur with distribution and a growing cinematic universe. Cuenca’s films often explore themes of identity, friendship, and the fun corners of human nature.

His film I’ll Be Around, a character-driven drama set at a DIY rock festival, won Best Indie Film at the 2020 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. Cuenca’s latest project, Boys About Town, is a four-part film series that follows the evolving relationship between two powerpop-obsessed boys over seven years, shot in real-time. The series draws inspiration from the French New Wave, with a nod to comic book aesthetics and 1960s pop art.

Cuenca’s films have screened at numerous festivals. His innovative approach to filmmaking and storytelling has earned him recognition as a rising voice in independent cinema, exploring themes of identity, friendship, and the fun + darker corners of human nature.

Currently, he is focused on expanding his body of work, seeking distribution opportunities, and pitching upcoming projects, including a spin-off of WATCH THEM COME BLOOD, titled THEY FIGHT LIKE DEMONS.

He lives in East Hollywood, CA with his cat Seymour.
